Impact assessment: According to a report from the Spanish YBS programme, more than 80% of mentors and two-thirds of mentees rated the initial induction session as ‘very useful’, indicating good preparation from the outset. In addition, three-quarters of mentees said the programme had a positive effect on their businesses (e.g., growth in turnover, improvements in management). In fact, 1 in 10 mentees said the improvements achieved would not have been possible without the support of their mentor, and an additional half said they would have been slower or less significant without them. From a qualitative perspective, there are testimonials such as that of Sandra, a young entrepreneur, who says: ‘My mentor gave me the confidence to make key decisions; in the year since we started, my turnover has grown considerably and I was able to hire my first employee.’ This shows how mentoring in an economic context can translate into tangible (stronger businesses) and intangible (confidence to undertake) results. Lessons learned: YBS's business mentoring highlights the importance of structured guidance and alignment of expectations from the outset (its comprehensive induction is applauded by mentors and mentees alike). It also exemplifies the need for good matching: pairing mentors and entrepreneurs with complementary profiles and compatibility in the sector is key to results. This programme, operating on a national scale, demonstrates that with quality standards (they have adopted much of Youth Business International's global methodology), a successful mentoring model can be replicated in different locations. For sustainability, they emphasise continuous training of mentors and the collection of success metrics (not only satisfaction, but also the mentees' business results) to demonstrate the programme's ROI to potential sponsors. 26
