Impact assessment: The 2022 results of the Atenea project were overwhelming (as mentioned above): 85% of young people decided to continue their education, 95% maintained or increased their academic motivation thanks to their mentor, and 100% improved their study techniques/grades. These figures come from surveys and specific educational monitoring (enrolment in higher education courses, grades obtained). In addition, the social educators who collaborated reported improvements in the young people's cross-cutting skills: communication, perseverance, self-esteem and autonomy. For their part, volunteer mentors reported in qualitative evaluations that the experience was very enriching and that they gained a better understanding of the realities of young people leaving care, increasing their social commitment. Sustainability of the relationship: An interesting factor about Atenea is that many mentors remain connected to the young people even after the year is over: for example, they continue to serve as informal role models during university or in the early stages of their careers. Some former mentees, once they have stabilised, have even volunteered for the association (not necessarily as formal mentors due to their proximity in age, but rather by supporting workshops for new participants, etc.), thus creating a virtuous circle. Punt de Referència has systematised Atenea's good practices and shares them through the Social Mentoring Coordinator so that other organisations can replicate them, amplifying the impact at the national level. Lessons learned: Atenea demonstrates the power of mentoring to influence complex social problems (school dropouts, exclusion of young people leaving care) with measurable results. It also shows the importance of adapting mentoring to the context: here, mentors receive specific training on trauma and resilience, and the programme integrates structured academic support. The combination of mentoring and education is very effective. Finally, it emphasises that support does not end upon “graduation” – sustainability lies in following up with young people and creating opportunities for them to give back when they can, thereby strengthening the community network. 24
