OnlineMentoringMethodology Since most mentors live in urban areas and most mentees are based in rural environments, the mentoring approach will be hybrid: in-person whenever possible, and online when needed. This ensures the viability of the program by overcoming geographical dispersion. Research on e- mentoring shows that online mentoring can be just as effective as in-person mentoring and is particularly suited to rural contexts, as it avoids barriers such as distance, limited transportation, and the shortage of local mentors. The following components outline this virtual methodology: Video conference sessions: Mentoring pairs (mentor-mentee) will meet regularly via video call platforms such as Google Meet. These virtual face- to-face sessions allow for direct interaction, practically replicating the closeness of a face-to- face meeting. A frequency (e.g., weekly or fortnightly) is agreed upon based on availability, with a typical duration of 1 hour per session. In these meetings, the mentor and mentee will discuss specific topics (personal goals, academic/career guidance, problem solving, etc.), fostering trust and personal connection despite the screen between them. The flexibility of time and location offered by videoconferencing facilitates consistent contact without the need for long journeys. Continuous communication via mobile app: In addition to scheduled video calls, the Tellfy app will be used to maintain daily contact in a secure and centralised manner. Tellfy is a platform designed specifically for mentoring projects that enables instant, private and effective communication between all participants. Through this app, mentors and mentees will be able to send text messages, share images or documents, and even respond to follow-up questionnaires after each meeting with complete privacy. The app will also serve to foster a sense of community among all those involved, creating general and thematic groups (for example, a group with all mentors to share best practices, or a channel for general programme announcements). In this way, although mentoring is primarily one-on-one, everyone feels part of a wider support network. Structured monitoring and resources: The programme will provide a roadmap with training content and activities to guide the mentoring relationship. Modules or thematic units (e.g., study skills, career guidance, digital skills, etc.) may be suggested for the pair to work through progressively. This semi-structured curriculum ensures that key aspects of the mentee's development are addressed and offers support materials (readings, videos, exercises) to enrich the discussions. However, there will also be flexibility for the mentor and mentee to explore free topics according to the needs or interests that arise along the way. All these resources and tasks can be shared via the online platform (by sending links or documents via Tellfy, for example). Training and support for mentors: Before starting the mentoring programme, urban mentors will receive specific training. This training will include raising awareness about rural realities (the challenges and potential of living in small towns) so that they understand the context of their mentees. For example, it is important to remember that rural areas often have less access to educational services, limited public transport and fewer leisure opportunities, which influences young people's prospects. The intergenerational and inclusion perspective will also be addressed, inviting mentors to communicate in an inclusive manner, free from generational or urban biases. Empathetic communication strategies in virtual environments will be discussed, as well as how to build trust at a distance. Training will also be provided on the technical use of digital tools (Google Meet and Tellfy), ensuring that all mentors feel comfortable using their features. During the programme, the technical team will be available to provide support for any technical issues or methodological questions that may arise, both for mentors and mentees. 14
