Maintaining the long-term commitment of mentors Progression of the mentor role: In the long term, the mentor role may evolve. Perhaps after a certain amount of time, one moves from being a direct intervention mentor to a more strategic role (e.g., lead mentor, training others). This refreshes the volunteer's motivation, giving them new challenges. An interesting model is that of ‘senior mentors’ who supervise newer mentors, thus maintaining their involvement without repeating exactly the same experience every year. For mentors who wish to do so, growth paths within volunteering can be designed. From the programme's perspective, getting mentors to stay beyond one cycle increases sustainability (less recruitment effort and more accumulated experience). We have already mentioned some strategies (creating community, recognition, advanced roles for experienced mentors). Here are some additional ones: Flexibility and support for retention: A mentor can continue for several years if they feel that the programme fits into their life. For example, offer the option of taking a short break between mentees (to avoid burnout), or make it easy to switch to group mentoring or another format if they need a lighter workload. Also, offering online or hybrid mentoring options can allow them to continue even if they move house. The programme should treat its mentors as a valuable resource, listening to their feedback and attending to their well-being. Happy mentors will remain committed for the long term. Create tradition and emotional attachment: Over time, successful programmes generate a mystique or tradition that veteran mentors treasure. For example, rituals such as an annual mentor retreat, an inspiring slogan or motto, and souvenirs (T-shirts, group photos) create attachment. It may seem anecdotal, but these symbols and rituals nurture a sense of belonging, making being part of the programme year after year something special and emotionally rewarding. 17 Evaluación del impacto y sostenibi l idad de la mentoría
